The decreasing ability to properly judge a certain situation and recall information is often referred to Senile Dementia. As we get older and weaken, our brains are slowly getting aged too. Mostly associated with seniors, dementia becomes something that is nearly inevitable to be objected to them. As some dementia cases are irreversible to be cured, today’s attentions are more likely about finding certain and trustable preventive solutions. Medical development has provided us with some advancement to minimize the risk of dementia. However, there are actually some activities we could do on our daily basis to prevent senile naturally.
1. Always Go for Exercise
Having regular exercise is not only beneficial for building up our strength and muscle. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, physical exercise can slow down and even limit the risk of cognitive deterioration. It does not mean that you have to hit the gym every day. The idea is to add movement to your routines and build such vibrant habit. Try to spend your 30 minutes in each day to start using stairs instead of the elevator or go for an evening stroll and get your brain powered up. Still, considering exercises that are focus on balance and coordination, like yoga or Tai Chi, will surely benefit your brain’s health.
2. Pay Attention to Your Diet
Your brain, indeed, needs to be fed too. Red meat, full-fat dairy products, or fried foods may go well to your palate. Yet, it is a big NO to your brain’s health. Get your menu to be filled with plenty of omega-3 obtained from either salmon, tuna, mackerel, or other cold-water fish, to help you prevent dementia. Considering Mediterranean diet or changing your menu to a heart-friendly diet will alleviate the risk too. Emphasize on consuming fruits and vegetables, along with daily cups of green tea or oolong tea will slow down the brain aging mechanism as well. Not to forget to mention to stop smoking, and drink moderately. There is long list of the downside effects of smoking that include damaging blood circulation and vessel in your brain. Thus, quit smoking will certainly help you slowing down the aging brain. Slightly different from smoking, having a little hint for drinking will benefit you, as moderate drinking is medically proven to be body buddy.
3. Mental Stimulation
To stay mentally active is one of the activities to prevent senile dementia too. Those who keep on challenging their brains to involve in lots of communication, interaction, and organization requisites tend to have a healthier brain. They are less likely to develop dementia, for their brains are trained to stay sharp and firing.
There are nothing called as “too old to learn new things.” Thus, it is highly suggested for seniors to keep their brain active by doing some brain-boosting activities, including reading and playing strategy games. Some mental workout that may include resolving puzzles or riddles will boost neuron performances as well. Additionally, stay sharp by demanding details to any information you want, to obtain and limit yourselves to being satisfied to subtle hints younger people gives.
4. Never Skip (Quality) Sleep
Sleep deprivation affects both your physical and brain works. Having quality and dreamy sleep could help you retain your brain. When we sleep, we let our organs be recharged and have a slight rest. Thus, consider sleeping with at least 8 hours per night will help your brain to be more relaxed. This will lead to cut the possibility of getting dementia when we reach our golden age. Start to establish regular sleeping schedule every night. Try to provide at least 20 minutes of pre-sleeping activities, including reading or writing. Make sure that you are relaxed to get optimum restorative sleep. Stay away from negativity and kick down all the inner chatters, so that you don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night and get your charging time disturbed.
5. Stress Management and Active Social Interaction
Stress can trigger your brain to be massively deteriorated. It strikes the hippocampus and hampers your neuron to stay growing and firing. Thus, it leads to reducing memory recalling. Keeping up your inner peace by doing meditation, pray, and self-reflection will keep your brain from being overly pressured.
Do not isolate yourselves. Circle yourselves with good and highly appreciating people to get such active social life. Your life mate, closest family and friends are the ones that are good to begin your supportive social life. Share both happiness and troubles with them and make a mutual bond with them. Enjoy your life by attending a dance class, going mount hiking, or a simple evening coffee sipping with the loved ones to bridge your emotional stability and brain health. Do not afraid to engage in any new relationships as you grow older. Keep everything to be interesting and there is no such thing as getting isolated along with your age.
