Lizard is a crawling creature which can be discovered on an extreme temperature and terrain. This cold blooded creature has formidable level of adaptation with the extreme environment. Lizards are also equipped with unique methods of hunting, self defense from the predator and adapted with the surrounding environment. This is the list of lizard species. Yes, they are unique, exotic and terrifying as well.
1.Phrynocephalus
This little guy lives in the dessert. The name is Phrynochephalus. They communicate with each other by pulling up and down their tails. Their body is shaken when they buried themselves in the sand. They will open up their mouth to intimidate the predator along with their scary face. This lizard are also called Toadhead Agama.
2. Brookesia minima
This one is probably the tiniest species of bunglon. They have a united finger like a pincher. Brookesia minima can hold the branches with their tail. This lizard can show their feeling through the rapid change of their skin. They have a pair of eyeball looks like a binocular and those eyes can move independently. This lizard mainly feed on insect using their long tongue to catch their prey. Brookesia minima is considered as the tiniest lizard.
3. Phryonosoma
The nickname of this lizard is “thorned frog”. Their fat body is covered with thick horn and skin. They live in the dryland, sandy environment and they are natural predator for ants. What is so special about this lizard anyway? Well, Phryonosoma have the strangest defense mechanism yet it’s terrifying. This lizard can transferring their blood pressure and squirted it through their pupil. The worst thing about this blood is, it’s acidic as well. So the predator would think twice to eat this lizard. But some of the dessert bird are didn’t care about it.
4. Moloch horridus
Although they are not related with thorny frog or thorny devil lizard at all, moloch has ben developing a lot of similar characteristic in order to adapt in dessert terrain.They have spiky body, sandy camouflage, and they feed on ants. The predators are having trouble eating this lizard due to its thorny body.
5. Hydrosaurus pustulatus
Phillipines Sailfin Lizard is an amphibian omnivore lizard. Their claws are designed to run away from the predators. The most interesting fact about this lizard is, they can run so fast although they are crossing the river, making a “walking” effect above the river. The male Phillipines Sailfin Lizard has a sophisticated color of blue, red or purple pattern.
6. Amblyrhyncus cristatus
These fellows inhabit the Galapagos archipelago. They spend most of their time in the coastline and dive under the sea looking for their favorite food, seaweed. The Founding Father of Evolution theory, Charles Darwin hate this animals for no reason. He called this lizard as the imps of “darkness”.
7. Gila
Gila has been considered as the venomous lizard. They have painful bites delivering neurotoxin through their tiny fangs. This lizard is almost similar with marble lizard. Although the other lizard is venomous, but Gila were still considered as the venomous lizard ever.
8. Bipes
Bipes biporus or baja worm lizard is technically not a lizard, they are categorized as Amphisbaenian. This strange reptile looks like a snake with legs. They spend their entire live underground hunting for worms and other insects. Their eyesight is poor but the can dig the ground very fast.
9. Komodo
This one is the biggest lizard in the world. Komodo, or Varanus komodoensis is the biggest carnivore lizard. They can grow up to 20 feet long. They are naturally a scavenger but they will not hesitate to hunt down the living prey. Their mouth is known to have thousands of deadly bacteria. They only need a single bite for their prey and they will wait patiently until their prey is dead. Komodo can swallow a whole body of their prey.
10. Gliding Lizard
Most of the lizard can stick their body to almost everything including in your window. It was because of microscopic branches in their skin. Gliding Lizard use their webbed feet and tail to glide in order to move from the tree to another.
11. Bunglon
This lizard is categorized into Agamidae family. Bunglon can change their skin color although is not fast as Chameleon. They hunt for insects
12. Bearded Dragon
This lizard is probably the most popular pet by the beginner or expert. Coming from Australia, bearded dragon is a little bit smaller than average lizard. They are omnivores; they feed on various kind of veggies and insects too.
13. Spiny-Tailed Lizard
Spiny Tailed Lizard or Uromastyx coming from hot and sandy terrain. They have 16 different species, so, there are lot of diversity from its appearance and geographical range. Uromastyx is omnivores lizard.
14. Blue Tongued Skink
As seen on the title, this lizard has blue tongue. It’s very contradictive with their pink colored line inside their mouth. This lizard can be tamed and it’s popular as pet. They are also omnivores lizard. Their diet consist of 60% of veggies and 40% of meat (it can be chicken, insect, or small rodent). The alternative environment for this lizard is dry and semi-desert. If you want to take this lizard as yourpet, make sure that you have a big cage with digging material. The ideal temperature for this lizard is around 26-37 celcius.
15. Spiderman Lizard
No,no, no, they are not realted to Peter Parker. This amazing lizard has red colored skin from head until their back and the rest of the body is colored in blue. Very similar with those wall crawler isn’t it? This lized can be found in African continent.
16. Gecko
This one is looks like a gecko, but they can’t stick at any kind of your wall. They mainly feed on cricket, worms and other insect. They will eat their skin after they change it.
17. Tengu
This fearsome lizard is amazingly calm in nature. So, don’t get fooled by its face. This lizard also has quite a long lifespan. They can live around 15-20 years. They mainly feed on rat according to it’s size. They are also can eat fruits .
