Italian foods have been introduced to the world and it also accepted by most of countries as one of the most delicious cuisines in the world. The history of Italian foods has been started in the 8 B.C when Greeks settlers were invaded by Sicilia and Magna Graecia in the southern Italy. The reason why Italian foods are famous are comes from their fresh ingredients and it’s easy to make. In this article, I will provide the lists of popular Italian foods, some of them are already popular while the other (I’m sure) hasn’t been tasted by most of us. 1. Chicken Parmigiana
Chicken Parmigiana is an Italian classic dish known for the delicious taste. This dish consists of crispy fried chicken combined with cheese and spaghetti. Chicken Parmigiana is a little bit similar with chicken cordon blue but the difference is the position of the cheese. The cheese is put inside a chicken cordon bleu while the cheese in chicken parmigiana is put above the dish. Chicken parmigiana is seasoned with Neapolitan sauce made from fresh tomatoes.
2. Fettucine alfredo
Alfredo sauce is one of the most popular sauces in Italy. Alfredo sauce has been used for cooking wide pasta like Fettuccine. Original Alfredo fettuccine was being cooked for the first time in 1920 by Alfredo di Lelio in Rome. Alfredo fettuccine’s recipe consists of butter, cream, fresh black pepper and parmesan cheese. The recipe is always developed since the first time it was being invented.
3. Lasagna
Lasagna can be a symbol of a person’s taste. Lasagna is one of the classic Italian cuisines. The tasty layer of Lasagna is made from flour and grilled in the oven is the main visual attraction of this dish. The recipe of lasagna has been developed and added with many variations of meats such as beef, sausages, mixed vegetables, chicken, seafood, ricotta, parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
4. Linguine alle Vongole
This dish is originated from Liguria and Genoa. Linguine is flat shaped pasta and it’s a little bit similar with Fettuccine. Linguine is wider than spaghetti but not much like fettuccine. Linguine is also called with bavette or trenette. Linguine with Oyster sauce or Linguine alle Vongole is the most popular dish in Italy. The oyster sauce is cooked with garlic and oil, and then it’s served along with the pasta. Al dente!
5. Veal Marsala
Marsala sauce is an Italian grape sauce and it’s famous with their mushrooms and onion grass blending. This sauce is usually cooked with chicken or beef. Sirloin is the favorite choice for this delicious dish.
6. Saltimbocca Chicken
Saltimbocca means “jump into a person’s mouth” in Italian. The name of this dish is suitable to use because this dish is so tasty and it’s the favorite Italian food in the world. Saltimbocca chicken is cooked by combining chicken with spinach, mozzarella cheese and prosciutto ham.
7. Primavera pasta
Are you bored with meat? If yes, you must try pasta primavera. It’s the most well known vegetarian dish in Italia. “ Primavera” means spring season in Italian. This dish is a combination between fresh vegetables and cheerful sauce like the joy of spring season.
8. Shrimp fra Diavolo
“Diavolo” means devil in Italian. The blazing red sauce in this dish make it called as Shrimp fra Diavolo. It’s a prawn dish cooked with sauce and pasta, onion and pepper has been added to strengthen the taste.
9. Penne alla Vodka
Vodka and penne pasta are the main ingredients of this dish. Penne alla Vodka is a dish consist of penne pasta, thick cream, garlic, tomato, meat and sausages. Vodka sauce is generally used in every Italian dish in the past few years. The vodka sauce ingredients consist of cream, marinara, vodka and basil leave.
10. Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce
The most cooked and popular Italian dish is Spaghetti with tomato sauce. Simple, affordable and it can be added with various ingredients such as mushrooms, broccoli, meatballs, veal or sausages are the reason why this dish is popular.
11. Pizza Margheritta
This is a traditional Italian food with special and unique flavor. Every Italian family has their own modified recipe of Pizza Margheritta sauce. Although it can be made in a simple way, a perfect combination between cheese and sauce is the key of delicious Pizza Margheritta.
12. Ravioli
The first ravioli was invented in Romanian era. Since Marco polo came back from his journey, most of ravioli is cooked with spinach and ricotta. This dish is suitable for vegetarian. Most of Europeans eat 2-3 portions of ravioli at the same time.
13. Risotto
Commonly found in Italy, risotto is popular in Venice. Mushrooms and seafood risotto is popular in Venice. Risotto usually cooked along with the following seasons in Italy. For the example, vegetable like asparagus is being added in risotto for celebrating spring and summer season.
14. Gnocchi
Gnocchi is a flour wonton with various styles and taste. The vegetarians usually eat “pomodoro” style gnocchi with cheese and tomato sauce. While the meat lovers can enjoy gnocchi with meat filling in entire Italy.
15. Prosciutto
Are you a meat lover? If yes, prosciutto is your answer. This is another favorite Italian food with meat as the main ingredients. Prosciutto is a combination between pasta, meat and cheese. The famous prosciutto using fresh Emilia-Romagna pork as their main ingredients.
16. Tiramisu
Tired of savory dish? Now it’s time for the sweet treat from Italy. Tiramisu is a cake with many size and taste. Most of traditional tiramisu is cream and cake. Several Italian restaurants put tiramisu inside a glass of ice cream with the thick layer of cream and thin layer of cake.
17. Gelato
Gelato is the name of Italian ice cream. Gelato can be found in gelateria or special shop for selling gelato. Gelato is considered as tastier treat than ice cream. Gelato has thicker texture and it’s tastier than ordinary ice cream. In the Southern part of Italy, gelato is made with non trans-fat. Gelato can be added with various kinds of fruits, nuts and biscuit.
18. Pasta Carbonara
Pasta Carbonara is also known as an Italian dish with a creamy taste in many countries. The combination of this pasta is consisting of egg, bacon, and white wine, mixed with rigatoni or spaghetti. The Italian version of pasta carbonara is considered as tastier then the modified American version of pasta carbonara.
19. Caffe
Caffe is the original name of Italian coffee. The most popular Italian coffee is Espresso. Many bars and café are serving this legendary beverage. If you didn’t like espresso that much, you can still order the cappuccino and Americana. If you ever go to Italy, don’t forget to try this strong beverage.
20. Roman Meals
The Roman Meals is also called as “Turista Menu”. This menu is usually consisting of 4-5 entries of dish which may vary on different restaurants. The first entry is started with the antipasto (appetizer), primo (your choice of pasta), second (meat), dolce (dessert) and drink.
21. Tartufo
Tartufo is our next delicious Italian food. This sweet dessert was made by Tre Scalini di Piazza Navona. Tartufo is a ball of ice cream coated with dark chocolate and sprinkled with chocolate around it. Tartufo is usually filled with cherry and grinded almond inside it.
22. Maritozzi
This one is another delicious dessert from Italy. Maritozzi is ouval bread made with raisin and orange skin. Maritozzi can be directly served or you can add this sweet and tiny bread with whipped cream. Maritozzi is very suitable as your coffee companion.
23. Crostata di Ricotta
Crostata di Ricotta is a cheese variation. Crostata di Ricotta is made with pasta frolla. Crostata di Ricotta is often placed above the ricotta along with fresh fruits. You can add raisins, grinded nuts and various fruits when you make this delicious cake.
24. Panna Cotta
Panna Cotta is the main dessert of Italian food. Panna cotta is suitable for children because this dessert is made from sugar and it’s definitely sweet. For a healthier version of panna cotta, you can add them with various kinds of fruits available at your market.
25. Tortellini
Tortellini is small Italian pasta shaped like ring. Tortellini is also called as umbellico, an Italian word means belly button. Tortellini is usually filled with the combination of meat and cheese. Tortellini is best served on broth sauce.

Bruschetta is one of the Italian appetizers. It was first introduced in the 15th century. The main ingredient of bruschetta is grilled bread. Bruschetta is usually cooked using brustolina, an Italian traditional oven.
27. Panini
Panini is an Italian sandwich. Panini is the Italian world which means “bread roll”. This Italian sandwich can be filled with sliced meats such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. Don’t forget to add sliced cheese, tomato and tuna.
28. Tramezzino
Tramezzino is a triangular Italian sandwich. Tramezzino is a cheap and popular dish in Italia. This popular dish can be located in every Italian bar and restaurants. Nowaday, there are 40 varieties of Tramezzino in Italy.
29. Chicetti
Chicetti is tiny snack and usually it can be located in Venice, Italy. Chicetti is usually served with a toothpick. If you ever go to Venice, don’t forget to try Chicetti before you going home. This tiny snack can be served along with sliced baguette bread.
30. Cannoli
Cannoli is one of the Italian desserts. Cannoli is originated from Sicilia. This dessert is a tube pastry filled with cream and ricotta cheese. There are three kinds of Cannoli in Dagnino. They are pistachio, vanilla and chocolate.
